Introduction    to Business

One Semester - Grades 9-12

​

This course is designed to give students an introduction into basic business principles.  Topics covered include: Economic Decisions and Systems, Economic Activity, Business Organization, Entrepreneurship, Management & Leadership, Marketing, Finance, Savings & Investments, and. This course is an introduction to business and the Rock Valley business program.  Some student chosen highlights of the course include a stock market simulation, preparing business plans to bankers, watching The Men Who Built America  and The Profit. This should be the first business elective chosen and is recommended for freshmen and sophomores, but open to all students.

Financial Literacy

One Semester - Grades 9-12

​

This course is designed to give high school students an understanding of how to manage their money. This will be the most valuable and relevant class you take in high school! Topics covered will include saving, budgeting, banking, debt, credit, life after high school, investing & retirement, careers & taxes, insurance, and more. This is a course packed with practical and relevant real-world learning.  Expect to learn how to manage your money and prepare for your financial future at a young age. Some student chosen highlights of this course include being able to fix their work, Dave Ramsey videos, and learning things that matter. This course is an elective recommended for any student wanting to get a grip on their financial future.

Intro. to Accounting

Full Year  - Grades 10-12

​

Students will be given an introduction to double-entry accounting and its general concepts.  Students will analyze business transactions, journalize them, and prepare financial statements for various types of businesses. The course takes students through the full accounting cycle for a service business organized as a proprietorship and a merchandising business organized as a corporation. Students will be given the opportunity to gain realistic experience by completing a business simulation.  Students will be encouraged to incorporate technology into their accounting work whenever possible. Students will be challenged to think deeply by analyzing real business financial statements and making realistic recommendations for improvements. This course is an upper-level business elective recommended for juniors and seniors. It is also a prerequisite for students who will apply for accounting roles in Rocket Office.

Marketing

  One Semester - Grades 10-12

​

This course is designed to give students an introduction into the field of marketing.  Students will explore how marketing affects their lives and its basic principles. Topics covered will include: The 4 P’s of marketing (product, place, price & promotion), marketing’s effects on our society, market research, competition, e-marketing, marketing strategy, new product development, advertising, careers in marketing, and more. Students will be encouraged and required to help develop, plan, and manage content for Rocket Manufacturing. This course is an upper-level elective and is recommended for juniors and seniors who have already taken a class or classes in the business program. It is also a prerequisite for students who will apply for marketing roles in Rocket Office.

Rocket Office

Full Year  - Grades 10-12

Full Year - Grades 10-12 - Prerequisites: Marketing, Intro to Business, or Intro to Accounting

Tired of classroom learning? Ready to put yourself to the test by working in a real business? Then Rocket Office is for you. Rocket Manufacturing is a real, student-run business. Rocket Office students will be responsible for managing the office. Student roles can include marketing, social media, public relations, web development, graphic design, quality control, shop management software operator, accounting, and more. Students will work on projects that support Rocket Manufacturing. Strong communication skills, creativity, and hard-work are needed. Students must apply for this opportunity and participate in an interview to be selected. Students are encouraged to take prerequisites that include Marketing, Intro to Business, or Intro to Accounting.

Senior Internship

One Semester (Spring Only) - Grades 12

​

Have all of your graduation requirements taken care of? Tired of classroom learning? Ready to put yourself to the test by working in a real business? Take this opportunity to earn high school credit while working outside of school in a real local business. Work within the fields of business, automotive technician, manufacturing, agriculture, food service, and more. You’ll meet with other students and the instructor along the way for reflection and learning activities. Students will  apply for this opportunity and participate in an interview to be selected. While there are no prerequisites for this course, students are encouraged to take many high school classes in their field of interest prior to taking on an internship.

6th Grade Computers

Full Year - Meets Every Third  Day

​

Middle school computer courses will give students an introduction to basic techniques in keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and internet usage.  The course is designed to focus more heavily on keyboarding, word processing, and web applications in 6th Grade.

MS Exploratory

Grades 7-8 - 6 Weeks

​

Middle school computer courses will give students an introduction to basic techniques in keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and internet usage.  The course is designed to focus more heavily on presentation software in 7th grade, and spreadsheet software in 8th Grade.  Students will be encouraged to explore computers and their applications.
